FAQ

Common questions answered.

Answers to common questions about an evaluation. Still curious? Reach out anytime.

Do you take my insurance?

I am out of network with insurance plans and I do not bill Medicare or Medicaid. If your plan covers out-of-network care, I can give you an itemized receipt to send to it.

What is a superbill and how do I use it?

A superbill is an itemized receipt that you may send to your plan to ask for reimbursement. It carries a diagnosis code, which your plan will see. Your plan decides whether it pays you back, and how much. Ask your plan whether psychological testing needs approval first.

What is a Good Faith Estimate?

If you pay without insurance, you have the right to receive a written estimate of your costs before care starts. If a bill is $400 or more above the estimate, you can dispute it. The estimate is not a contract.

How much does it cost and how do fees work?

I give you the fee for the whole evaluation in writing before you book, and there is nothing to pay until you decide to begin. The page on how fees work covers insurance, receipts, estimates and cancellation.

Can I use an HSA or FSA card?

Usually, yes. Many health savings and flexible spending cards work for an evaluation. Check with your plan administrator if you are unsure.

What happens in the first session?

The first session is a 60-minute interview about your history and your question. We agree on which tests make sense and how many visits they will take. No testing happens until you agree to the plan.

How many visits will it take, and how long are they?

It depends on your question. An evaluation usually includes an interview, one or more testing visits and a feedback session. I tell you the plan and how long each visit will take before you book.

Are you licensed where I live?

I am a licensed psychologist in Maryland. I see clients in person in Annapolis, and by video if you are in Maryland when we meet. Some tests must be done in person. I cannot see clients who are in other states.

What do I do in a crisis?

Call or text 988, any time, or call 911 in an emergency. This practice is not an emergency service, and messages sent through this website are read on weekdays.

What is private, and what are the limits?

What you say in session stays private, with exceptions the law requires, such as a serious risk of harm to you or someone else, abuse of a child or dependent adult, or a court order. A report is shared only with people you name in writing. I explain this in the first session.

Can you evaluate my child or teenager?

I evaluate adults only. If you are looking for an evaluation for a child or teenager, write to me and I will suggest where to look.

What is your cancellation policy?

I set testing visits aside for you alone, so I ask for 48 hours of notice to cancel or move one. A late cancellation may be charged, and I use judgment when something unavoidable comes up.
